Issues getting T3 storage unit connected

Hi all,

We recently purchased a T3 storage tray from a Sun reseller. I have
connected it via fiber to a Sun E6500 server. There are no issues with
that connection -- when I powered the unit up after connecting the fiber
loop, the server saw the system, brought the loop online, and created
several /dev/rdsk entries.

The problem I'm having is with getting the device itself configured with
the proper IP address (I also need to get in there to reconfigure the
volume). I gave it a network connection and, using Sun's instructions, set
up a RARP server on the network (on the E6500, actually) to assign an IP
to the system. I reset the T3, and when it came up rarpd saw the request
and reported a valid lookup:

 9:34AM server [ /etc ] > /usr/sbin/in.rarpd -d -a
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[1] device hme0 ethernetaddress 8:0:20:e4:aa:b0
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[1] device hme0 address 161.112.92.197
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[1] device hme0 subnet mask 255.255.254.0
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] starting rarp service on device hme0 address
8:0:20:e4:aa:b0
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] RARP_REQUEST for 0:20:f2:0:de:8f
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] trying physical netnum 161.112.92.0 mask fffffe00
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] good lookup, maps to 161.112.93.106
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] RARP_REQUEST for 0:20:f2:0:de:8f
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] trying physical netnum 161.112.92.0 mask fffffe00
/usr/sbin/in.rarpd:[5] good lookup, maps to 165.112.93.106

However, I am unable to telnet to the assigned address. Attempts just
hang. tcpdump shows the attempts:

[...]
11:29:22.294776 server.cit.nih.gov.42701 > t3es.telnet: S
3460496304:3460496304(0) win 24820 <nop,nop,sackOK,mss 1460> (DF)
11:29:22.318699 server.cit.nih.gov.42701 > t3es.telnet: R
3460496305:3460496305(0) win 24820 (DF)
[...]

nmap'ing that address takes very long and shows ports like 23 and 80 as
being "filtered". I wouldn't even know the system was connected at all,
except that when I connect to its IP with a web browser, I get a
username/password box that has the banner "NobleGUI 1040197206". If I
enter "root" here with no password, I get a 404. If I enter any other
information, I get an authorization denied response.

I decided to try the alternate method of getting into the system and
connected an RJ-11 cable with a serial adapter to a WinXP laptop and ran
hyperterminal. After performing a HW reset, I watched the system go
through its boot sequence on the terminal screen and was given a Login:
prompt. However, I was not able to type anything and have it recognized by
the system! Nothing I entered apppeared on the screen. I fiddled with all
of the serial connection settings, performed additional hardware resets,
all to no avail.

I am asking for advice from T3 users and anyone who can provide
suggestions or thoughts on what might be going on here. I have been able
to find next to nothing on the web regarding issues of this nature and am
stuck. I don't want to write this off as a hardware issue, nor do I want
to run to Sun support if I can help it.
