Mounting Netapp across WAN

Hello-
I'm looking for performance issues relating to Netapps and WAN usage.

1) Is mounting a Netapp across a WAN advisable via NFS?

2) Would there be any performance loss on the host that is mounting the
netapp ( Entire machine running sluggish)?

3) Would using automount vs. static NFS mount provide any relief in
performance.

Suggestions?
