instant messaging like AFS's zephyr

Managers:

I'm looking for any kind of instant messaging software that will function
like AFS's zephyr system for Solaris 8. What I'd like is a service that
will automatically start when a user logs into a workstation and will
display the messages to that users X session. I'd rather not use a 3rd
party service like AOL or yahoo or what not, but something based on local
naming service/security.

Any suggestions?
