Connecting external Hard Drive

I have just purchased a 2nd user 18.2 GB StorEdge unipack hard drive
(GWV611-D). The disk came with no instructions

Is it sufficient just to shut my E450 down connect the drive and reboot ?

Will the device be visible through 'format' after the reboot or are further
steps required first ?
