Tar question

I am in the process of moving approximately 180GB of files from one
server (Solaris-2.7) to another server (RH-Linux-7.2).

To copy the files to the new location I am mounting the original server
via NFS and using tar in the following manner:

(from the source directory)
tar cf - . | (cd <target directory>; tar xvf -)

The files get there just fine, but at the destination, a 'du -ks' shows
a much larger amount of data than the source shows... The files are good
and not corrupted. The individual files when listed with an 'ls -la' are
the same size...

Anyone have any ideas or can point me in the right direction as to why
this is?

Thanks,
Wes
