Remote Monitoring via SNMP

Hello Managers and Gurus.

I know this question has come up many a time, but I've yet to see a good
answer to it. Here's what I want:
I want to be able to use SNMP to monitor my various Sun machines
(workstations up to E6500's) so as to get at LEAST as much information as
prtdiag gives me. And, I don't want to use an NMS. I've used
SyMon/SMS/etc and it's just too bloated and massive. Not to mention
having a really really slow interface. The default SNMP OIDs exported by
default are all network related (which are the things I care least about)
so I need a package to suppliment this. Sun has several packages that
look like they might be bent to do what I want, but I'd rather not guess
at it. The likely contender is "Solstice[tm] Enterprise Agents". I also
noticed an interesting package, "Network Storage Agent 2.1" which is worth
looking into. I plan to write my own monitoring scripts via PERL and
Net-SNMP so all I need is for the systems to export the OIDs for system
vars.
Has anyone tried doing this? Any success? Any hints are useful.

Thank You.

benr.
