GCC 3.2 and missing 'ar'

Hi there

I'm using a Ultra Enterprise 2 desktop machine as a test Webhead. I've just
built it with Solaris 9 and then added a number of packages from sunfreeware
(an ftp mirror anyway)

I have 2 probably simple questions

1) I'm having issues with everything that I compile (so far Vim, PHP and
Lynx) always different messages. Obviously I'll try the respective help
resources but before I do I'm wondering if it's because I'm using GCC 3.2
off of sunfreeware. The only other version that I've seen available for
Solaris 9/Sparc is 3.1. Should I reinstall Solaris 8 and use a GCC < 3?
(i.e. 2.9.5) Is anyone else successfully using GCC 3.2?

2) As mentioned above, any compilation is barfing, the most recent being
lynx. It falls over because 'ar' is not found. Can someone tell me what
package that belongs to? I can't find it on my system and there is no
/usr/bin/ccs directory that it might be hidden in.

thanks
