As Darren Dunham pointed out, it was just the VTOC I wanted to erase. Andy Yother suggested under (f)ormat (t)ype and then (l)abel to select auto configure (option # 0), which worked. The label command must be used after in order for it to stick.I had tried selecting "SUN9.0G" (option # 18) but it had no effect.
