What am I doing wrong? Netra X1 Hangs On Network Install O

jamiel,
There are three stages in the boot process.

1. rarpd - gets it's name for /etc/ethers based on MAC address
2. tftp - gets it's boot kernel from /tftpboot
3. nfs - loads the install over nfs

Obviously rarpd is working because you are loading the boot (stage 2).
I'm not sure if this is working. Try doing a verbose snoop of your
interface
while this is happening. This should be really helpful. I use tcpdump -Xvvv
-i hme0 myself.

Also the file that gets created in /tftpboot. This comes from

Solaris_9/Tools/Boot/usr/platform/sun4u/lib/fs/nfs/inetboot or somewhere
near there.
Check that the correct file is being used and not a Solaris 8 one. You
should see errors
from tcpdump that will should you exactly where it is going wrong

Also check that you can tftp to the server in question and it is working
properly

eg. # tftp tftpserver
tftp> get C0B8123A.SUN4C
Recieved 678 bytes in 05 seconds
tftp> quit

Other than that check that nfs is working properly on the server.

Subject: What am I doing wrong? Netra X1 Hangs On Network Install Of
  Solaris 9
To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org

Hi Folks,

I'm having a problem installing Solaris 9 on my Netra
X1. I've burnt 2 days on this issue with no resolution
in sight. I've gone thru sunsolve, docs.sun.com and
can't find anything to assist me.

I'm attempting to install Solaris 9 from an install
server. The configs are:

Install server
Ultra-10 / Solaris 8 (name: kingtut)

Netra X1 (name: monster)
Solaris 8, latest patch cluster applied
OpenBOOT 4.0.14 (patch applied)

Both machines are on the same subnet. Ultra-10 gets
its IP from a DHCP server. I've wired my IP address
(although I can get an IP from DHCP as well, but have
that disabled). I don't have control over the DHCP
server.

Steps I've taken:

1. Using setup_install_server/modify_install_server,
I've created the CD images on the Ultra 10.

2. Added 'monster' to the install server's hosts file
and the MAC address of monster to /etc/ethers on the
install server.

3. Used 'add_install_client monster sun4u' and get the
following:

making /tftpboot
enabling tftp in /etc/inetd.conf
starting bootparamd
starting nfs mountd
updating /etc/bootparams
copying inetboot to /tftpboot

4. On monster, I halt it, get to ok> and do 'boot
net'.

#halt
Nov 19 13:19:22 monster halt: halted by root
Nov 19 13:19:22 monster syslogd: going down on signal
15
syncing file systems... done
Program terminated
ok boot net
Res
LOM event: +18h20m6s host reset
etting ...

5. However, this is where it hangs (below). It seems
that it loads up 24000 bytes(?) and then stalls. I
have to physically power down monster to regain any
control.

Sun Netra X1 (UltraSPARC-IIe 500MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 4.0, 512 MB memory installed, Serial
#50670302.
Ethernet address 0:3:ba:5:2a:de, Host ID: 83052ade.

Executing last command: boot net
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ethernet@c File and args:
24000
-- hangs here (i.e. over 5 minutes) --

Does anyone know what I've done wrong or a step that
I'm missing?

Thanks very much

/jamiel

Subject: reading Solaris-created cpio archive on AIX

Hello. I created a cpio archive on Solaris 8:

cat file list | cpio -ocaO archive.cpio

I have tried to read it on AIX 4.3 with no success. I usually can read a
cpio archive just about anywhere with a little command-line tweaking of
file format types, but I have not been able to make it work for AIX 4.3.

I went through many pages of google and sunmanagers but found no help.
Ideas?

Subject: Clearing log file doesn't work (many methods attempted)

I tried to search the archives and found some stuff related but didn't
seem to fix the issue so I thought I would ask. If this has been
answered before please just a quick link to the answer and I will be
very grateful. Thanks!

I'm working on a number of Sun servers which run an application server
(Broadvision). It uses CORBA as it's underlying framework and all the
servers write to a log file 'orbixd.log' (they use IONA for the ORB).
After a while this log file grows quite large and we want to rotate it
so that we can keep space usage down. I have tried the following:

1) Making a copy of the log file to a different name (with a timestamp)
and then cat /dev/null > orbixd.log or cp /dev/null > orbixd.log or some
incantations of sed in the form of sed '1,<last line>d' orbixd.log >
orbixd.log (I realize that's a little crazy since it's going to blow
away the file once it's opened but it was suggested by tech support).

The file will go to zero bytes for all of a couple seconds and then pop
back to 550+MB (as displayed with ls -la).

The size returned from du -sk is about the correct size (very small).

When I cat the file I notice after doing one of the methods that the
file is empty, and has *lots* of empty space at the beginning of it (but
then wc -l reports something like 2000 lines, for a 550+MB file).

We have not removed the file (the servers aren't writing to an inode
that I can't see which is the usual variant on this question). I just
can't clear the file out.

Note: This is a file system mounted on an EMC array. And this is a
special 'image' that has been developed for this company (certain items
have been removed such as all the man pages, etc).

cheers
ian

Subject: SUMMARY: flarcreate with multiple excluded dirs
I got a little bit of conflicting information here, and ended up
performing a few tests. It was suggested that flarcreate is a bit buggy
(or just limited in capability) but that Solaris 9 12/02 should have a
better one that allows multiple excludes. The sun guys said it couldn't
be done, but Dale suggested that he had no problem with multiple -x <dir>
calls, ala:
           flarcreate ... -x /dir1 -x /dir2 ...
I also tested with multiple -x's (both for and within mount points) and it
seems to exclude everything I asked to exclude. So the summary is that it
seems to work fine in the cases I've tried (on Solaris 8 2/02 with latest
jumbo, in case you were wondering) and other people have had success now,
but also that it will improve more in solaris 9 12/02. :)
Thanks to Mike Demarco, Ahau K'in, and Dale Hirchert for the information!
cheers and thanks,
ivo

All,
I wanted to see if anyone out there also has the dubious
honor of running CA products within Solaris 8.
I'm running into various issues with their products, in
particular with CA7 Unicenter, CA Etrust Antivirus, AMMO,
and TND 3.0.
If you have any war stories to tell, and especially if you
have any success stories, I would be more than interested
in hearing from you.
I will summarize.

Reply-To: brounb@adi-limited.com
I have two E420rs running solaris 8. I also have an A5200 unit with two
loops configured; there are 4 disks in each loop and two GBIT adaptors in
the A1 and B0 positions. Currenty the two E420Rs have two FCAL adaptors
each, but one is unused.
We want to move the disks from the rear of the system to the front so that
one host has access to all 8 disks (the other little piggy gets none). We
also want to move the GBIT adaptor from the A1 position (for rear drives)
to the A0 position (for front drives) and connect this to the 2nd FCAL
adaptor in the host.
Does this automatically give redundancey of host adaptors such that if one
card failed the other would just continue to access the drives? (this is
what we are after). Does it increase thruput to the drives?
Thanks in advance

hi managers..
need some help with a wierd problem. ufsdump failed with error point to
tape
drive. but after i change the drive with a working one it still error.
system SF280R attach to external tape drive using onboard scsi port. when i
do backup #ufsdump 0ucf /dev/rmt/0n / and /var it is ok. but when i do on
/usr error accurs. not state about harddisk error only point to tape drive.
change the tape and error still accurs. ufsdump to file OK. fsck multiuser
OK fsck single user OK fsck while booting using cd OK w/out error but when
i
try to do backup same error come out.
so i leave the system up for few days maybe 3 week then i came to
troubleshoot again the problem. try backup and the error did not accurs. i
try change tape and it went fine. first i thought maybe the system is OK
now
so i try rebooting the system then do backup. and only now the error came
again. what i can see / is 51Mb and /var around 100Mb. i try to backup /usr
around 700Mb FAILED and /opt1 aroung 10Gb moounted on another hdisk also
FAILED. so i though maybe / and /var success is because of it's small size.
can someone give me any clue??
tia and i will summarize
