Sorry for the late summary. After passing a few email back and forth
with Jeff Rhyason (thanks Jeff) I went out and bought a usb audio card
(xitel hifi-link) for $50 and it worked like a charm.
The only thing to be aware of is that the audio device is tied to the
console, you'll need to take ownership of the devices that get created
when you plug in the usb device unless you've logged in via the console.
