substitution/replace a field in a file

I need to replace the 4th field in a bunch of files
with some different strings. The fields are
space-separated. RegExp search and replace seems
having a problem handling this, due to the fact that
the 4th field has such a diverse collection of weird
characters, including "/ \ : ;", or whatever you can
think of to use as your search/replace delimiters.

So any idea how to replace this?
