Veritas Cluster Server - without shared disks

Anyone running VCS without sharing any disks between the servers ? Manuals
seem to imply you need to share some disks.
I have a pair of 280R servers with internal disks only, that I would like to
use VCS for application failover on.
The application keeps it data in an oracle database on a seperate pair of
VCS-clustered servers.
Why do I need shared disks for on a pair of application servers when all I
want if VCS to fire back up the apps processes on the second server if the
first one fails.
