su - username fails with No Shell & No Directory

SunManagers,

We have two Netra 105s that have identical hardware (64mb, Sun 9GB hard
drive, etc.). Both were loaded with Solaris 8 02/02 without any
problems. Both Netras have the same task and are configured the same.
One had the Solaris8_Recommended patches applied; the other Netra has
not.

On the Netra with the Solaris8_Recommended patches we cannot "su
username" or "su -username". Here are the messages

# su username
  "su No shell"

# su - username
  "su No directory!"

The Solaris8_Recommended patches contained patch numbered 109793-12.
This patch is applied to su. Unfortunately, the installer script did
not save the outdated files and the patchrm cannot remove the patch.

Has anyone seen this problem before?
Does anyone have a fix?
Must the OS be re-installed?

Any help and pointers would be appreciated.

Thank you!
