Systems Administration Tools

Greetings list:
I'm an old Linux user, who is trying to administer a Sun V880 machine. Thus
far, I've been using command-line tools for nearly all the administration.
However, I've started looking through the available GUI tools, and I've seen
several packages, and I'm a bit confused as to which does what, how they
relate or override each other, and whether I should even bother with these
tools.

First, I'm looking at the SMC, or Solaris Management Console. It's
currently at version 2.0 on this system. I can not seem to find this
software package anywhere on sun's site. I was wondering if this is the
most updated version of this software, or whether there was something
different being used.

One of the problems I was having with the SMC originally was mounting
drives. I created a partition, and mounted it by hand. I was unable to
mount this partition through the SMC, and couldn't find anyplace to do so.
After it was mounted, I thought I'd try and use the SMC to enable it on
boot. Eventually, I just modified the /etc/vfstab file by hand to add this
mount. However, I don't know if there's any configuration scripts or
parameters stored elsewhere that could have been affected by this. I could
use suggestions or comments on whether I did the right thing by this,
whether there actually was a solution through the SMC, or whether I'm
looking at the wrong set of tools.

In relation to the Solaris Management Console, I found the Sun Management
Center online on Sun's software systems management area. How does this
management center relate to the Solaris Management Console. Does the Sun
Management Center override the Console? Is this already included someplace
in another package that I'm not aware of? Would it be beneficial to install
and use this software? If so, is it free for use on a SPAR/Solaris system?
I have the System administration applications package installed, Solaris
Administration Wizards installed, and the "AdminSuite" installed. Those are
the immediate files that I see, but I do not see the Sun Management Center
anyplace.

I'm doing remote administration from my linux box via ssh:
startx /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -- :1, sshing into the solaris system, and using
a dtsession or gnome-session. When I try and start the smc after using this
method, the refresh or display of the smc isn't working. It looks like
there's a problem with the refresh or painting of the panels. I do NOT have
this problem when running the smc on the monitor attached to the box itself.
Is this a known error with either smc or java? Is there anyone who has seen
this and knows of a way to fix this problem?

Last, I noticed java 1.2.2 is installed by default. Should I upgrade to JDK
1.3 or even 1.4.1? Will this break any of sun's management tools, or would
this concievable fix things?

Advice, suggestions, and comments are much appreciate.
Thanks!
Jason McIntosh
