On the purely technical question of whether it would be possible
to use the A1000 on a Linux box, the answer was yes; but
there isn't an analog to Raid Manager for Linux, so
it would be difficult to administer it. Tim Lynch pointed
out that the A1000 has a serial console, but even then
there would be no way to receive notices.
But the general consensus was that I should think twice
about purchasing an A1000: it's getting pretty long in the
tooth, and there are better third-party solutions out there that
are truly multi-platform. Specific recommendations
included the AC&NC Jetstor and Compaq/HP's Storageworks RA3000
(though I'm not sure that latter supports Linux).
Thanks for the help! I'm going to do some more
research into third-party alternatives now.
