Solaris 9, Java and Installations

Hola!

I've been getting odd java webstart error messages on both a Solaris 9
and a 2002/02 Solaris 8 (but not earlier versions) install attempt.

Being a bit old school, I don't use the gui install, nor the install cd,
finding that booting off of disk 1 has better results, especially on a
terminal.

In the past I've always edited the basic install to remove unneeded
packages and speed up the install. In this case, I did a number of
customizations, and had the following settings for java.

        (End User System Support 64-bit)
    [ ] Java Plug-in
    [ ] Java SNMP API
        [/] JavaVM

The following were shown as compatibility errors:

JDK 1.2 run time environment Motif RunTime Kit
System administration applications Motif RunTime Kit

The following errors arrived after the first reboot after install (it did
prompt for the addition of a root password):

java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no awt in java.library.path
        at java.lang.Throwable.fillInStackTrace(Native Method)
        at java.lang.Throwable.<init>(Throwable.java:94)

        at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:479)
The Webstart launcher has terminated unexpectedly.
The Webstart launcher will restart following a system reboot.
Press the Return key and a system reboot will
take place on your machine.

I couldn't dig up a trivial way to get around the issue, and ended up
reinstalling for time issues[0]. It will error and reboot happily ad nauseum.

My questions are fairly straightforward. Does the installer now have a
dependancy on Java (and if so, why are the necessary components removable).

If there is no dependancy, what is the mechanism for avoiding this?

cheers!
[0] I don't happen to have a spare box kicking around that I can spend
hours reinstalling, to see what exactly tickles this bug.
