tar write error

HI all,

Solaris 8 with no disksuite on this disk. I am trying to untar a 70MB tar
ball. I keep getting "HELP: extract write error".

df -k shows 6GB of space available
inode is only 24% used
lsof shows no opened file in this file system

the tarball contains lots of 5k XML files and lots of subdirectories.

Any idea where to start?
