This seems to be a bug in Solaris 8. The only solution offered to us is to
move to 9, where it is claimed to be fixed. We are not happy with this, to
say the least!

Subject: poor oracle 8 on solaris8 performance....

Hello.

We recently tried to upgrade an enterprise server running oracle 8 from sol
2.6 to sol8. Under load testing the new configuration performed terribly.
(About 5 x slower at worst!)

The performance degrades with use after a reboot. It starts out a bit faster
that the 2.6 configuration, but then steadily decays under use over a period
of hours.
Trussing oracle showed that a LOT of time is consumed by fsync.
We reverted the system back to sol 2.6, and got the good performance back.

So far we haven't gotten a solution from Sun. Has anyone seen this before?

The data files exist on vxfs filesystems on an EMC.

VRTSvxfs version = 3.4,REV=GA03
VRTSvxvm version = 3.2,REV=08.15.2001.23.27
Solaris = 2.8, mu7, latest patches.
Oracle = 8.1.7

Thanks,

Dan
