Timed out waiting for NIS to come up HOW TO BYPASS?

I am running Solaris 8 on Sun Ultra 5.
I just created /etc/dhcp.hme0 so that the machine could use DHCP.
I then attached the machine to a network that does NOT have NIS running.
Now the machine times out waiting for NIS to come up.
How do I bypass this so that the OS can boot, and I can
get to the files and disable DHCP?

This is a terrible "chicken or the egg" problem.

All docs.sun.com said was:

1. Verify that the Ethernet cable is connected at the workstation and at
the wall outlet.
2. Verify with your system administrator that the network is operational.

Is the OS really designed so that the machine locks up if the network
or network services are down?

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
