Running NIS in compat Mode Breaks OpenSSH

We're using NIS in a Solaris 8 environment with OpenSSH_3.1p1, SSH protocols
1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0x0090601f. I'm trying to test using netgroups to restrict,
by NIS account, access to systems by running NIS in compat mode. I have made
the following change to /etc/nsswitch.conf:

passwd: compat files

This breaks SSH client connections, specifically Exceed 7.1.1 with Security
Connection Module and from OpenSSH_3.1p1, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL
0x0090601f from Solaris 8 clients.

I suspect there is a /etc/ssh/sshd_config setting I'm missing or a
/etc/pam.conf setting possibly. I have located prior posts on this specific
issue but could not locate a solution that was posted. I've opened a case with
Sun but their first response is "We don't support SSH with Solaris 8".

Any direction would be most appreciated and I'll summarize any assistance you
can provide.

Thanks gurus,

Brent Killion
