Subject: Installing Solaris 9 on RAID 5
Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 12:14:31 -0400

Hello,

I have an Ultra 2 machine, which has 3 9.1GB hard drives connected to
it. I
am trying to create a RAID 5 volume out of the 3 disks and then install
Solaris 9 on it.

I initially thought it was possible to install Solaris on the first disk
and
then convert it into a RAID 5 volume using Solaris Volume Manager.
However, a
Solaris Volume Manager Administration Guide states: "Do not create a
RAID 5
volume from a component that contains an existing file system. Doing so
will
erase the data during the RAID 5 initialization process", so creating a
RAID 5
volume after the OS is installed is not an option.

I was wondering if there is any other way to implement a Solaris
installation
on a RAID 5 volume.

Regards,

Eugene

I have setup the engine name and the error is unable to connect to

Thanx for all the responses. I should have been more specific in saying
that
the laptop is a natureteck 747s SPARC processor laptop. the problems
turned
out to be the mach64 drivers from the solaris 8 cd didn't get installed,
and
after they were installed it turned out that it was actually missing 3
drivers, the SUNWm64.us, the drivers for X for the card and the loadable
module drivers for the card.

After everything was thrown in, the machine was rebooted and the xserver
started without problems.

Again. Thanx for the assistance.

Gurus,
This ones' a bit off topic, but I'm sure an easy one for some of you
sed/awk heads.....I have have these files that have one username per
line, i.e.
user1,
user2,
user3,
How can I get these lines concatenated onto the same line so this file
contents would look like:
user1,user2,user3
I've tried using sed to strip out the return ascii return code /15 (by
generating a ^M in the sed script with vi) but that doesn't seem to get
them 'together'.
TIA

Hi,
We have about 20 servers in our server room(We are a small company). Our
server room air-conditioner is no longer cutting it. Servers don't like
heat and our Sun servers put out alot of heat.
I'm wondering if there are any websites or if you have any suggestions

All,
We currently have a boot server that assigns display numbers such as
"system:6.0" to each system that boots. Once the user telnets to another
system we set the display using xauth as follows:
DISPLAY=`/usr/bin/X11/xauth -i list | head -1 | cut -f1 -d" " `.0
which sets the DISPLAY to system:6.0.
The problem is that is takes between 15 and 40 seconds for xauth to read
the
.Xauthority file and assign the display.
Does anyone know of a faster process?

SUMMARY:
I successfully installed two Western Digital 120GB HDDs in a SunFire
V100.
P/N: WD1200JB-00CRA1
NOTE for jumper settings:
I had to set the boot drive c0t0d0 to Cable Select.
And the second drive chained with the CD-ROM drive was set to Master.
Hope this information helps someone else out there.

ORIGINAL question below:
I only found a single question about 129GB IDE HDDs with no summary
in the archives.
So I am going to ask: Is it possible to use 120GB IDE HDDs in a
SunFire V100. And if so, which brand(s) or model(s) have you used.
Thanks.

I am getting the subj error on my Apache server running on Solaris 8. I
have
found this at sunmangers: ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_conn_req_max_q 1024.
this
doesn't help. i am getting the errors even more frequent.
I have also tweaked httpd.conf as per Tuning Your Apache Web Server on
Suns
Dot-Com builder site.
The env is: Apache webserver connecting to a WebSphere Application
Server on
Solaris 8 also that is running the servlet engine for all of our
applications. I can give more info out if need be.
What are the different settings for ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_conn_req_max_q
1024
that I can test out?
Should I tweak any other params?
All help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks once again, this list is amazing.....there were several eloquent
ways to do this, these were the 'simple is best' solutions:
esaddler@cccis.com
cat filename | tr -d "\012"
"Jeremy Jin" <jin@gedco.com>
echo `cat yourfile`
"John Elser" <jElser@ck8.uscourts.gov>
cat filename | awk ' {printf }'
"TRUCKS, JESSE (AIT)" <jt9873@sbc.com> provided 2 correct ways:
awk '{printf("%s"),$1}' filename
AND (for ksh):
for USERID in $(cat filename);
   do echo "${USERID}\c";
done
Fabrice Guerini <fabrice@life.net>
perl -ne 's/\s*\n//; print;' filename
Gordon Baldwin <gordon.baldwin@gettyimages.com>,
Joshua Beining <JBeining@eline.com> &

These gents all provided similiar a simple perl construct:
#! /usr/bin/perl

Subject: CDE startup problem
To: sunmanagers <sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org>
Dear Friends,
I have never posted to this list before, but I have been reading it a
little
while now. Hopefully you will pardon my lack of knowledge, but I
have a problem, which I think probably has been seen before, or somebody
might be able to help me with. I very much appreciate any time you
might be able to help with, I know your time is valuable.
Let's see, recently upon a rare reboot, I found that my SUN E-250
server would not start up X/CDE upon reboot. I need to figure out
why, so I can fix it. It is a production server, and I can't have it
not
come back up while I'm out of town, for example.
So I did a little bit of looking. Inside of the file /.dt/errorlog.old
I find the
following statements:
Workspace Manager: I/O error on display:: :0.0
dtsession: Connection to server lost - exiting.
First, is this the error message I don't see upon reboot? Second, if
this is why, how can I find out why I get this?
Thank you much for your kind assistance.

I upgraded my NIS+ server from 2.6 to 2.6.
In 2.6 I used to use solstice to manage my user accounts and hosts etc.
In 2.8 I use Adminsuite to do this however there is no option within
Adminsuite for "hosts" or "hosts manager" like there was in solstice
to add hosts.
What is the equivalent to Solstice Host Manager on Solaris 2.8?
Thanks Much.

Subject: jumpstart problem (after tftp stage)
Gurus,
I am having problems with jumpstarting one Ultra AX-MP. The jumpstart
server configuration has not been changed for a long time, and before
this time I have never had problems with jumpstarting other AXMPs..
The box is coming up, loading TFTP image, and hanging right after that:
UltraAX-MP WorkServer (2 X UltraSPARC-II 400MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.7 ME, 1024 MB memory installed, Serial #10429456.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:9f:24:10, Host ID: 809f2410.
Boot device: disk File and args:
{0} ok boot net - install
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/network@1,1 File and args: - install
2aa00
"2aa00" is the last message from the box.. Then it has to be
power-cycled,
break does not work to get to OpenBoot PROM..
>From the jumpstart server we can see that the last packet that the box
is
sending is a confirmation that the image was successfully loaded via
TFTP:
     ...
     js-srv -> new-srv      TFTP Data block 310 (368 bytes) (last block)
     new-srv -> js-srv      TFTP Ack  block 310
There is no conflict in IPs, MAC-addresses, switch port is set to
100Full.
The openboot prom version is the same as on other AXMP boxes that have
been
successfully jumpstarted (3.10.7).
Any ideas why it fails would be highly appreciated!
Alex
