Thanx for all the responses. I should have been more specific in saying that
the laptop is a natureteck 747s SPARC processor laptop. the problems turned
out to be the mach64 drivers from the solaris 8 cd didn't get installed, and
after they were installed it turned out that it was actually missing 3
drivers, the SUNWm64.us, the drivers for X for the card and the loadable
module drivers for the card.
After everything was thrown in, the machine was rebooted and the xserver
started without problems.
