solaris 7 -> solaris 9?

hello managers.
I have a very crucial web server on my ultra 10:
SunOS ishtar 5.7 Generic_106541-04 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10

I'd like to upgrade to solaris 9.
IS it reccomended to use the update procedure or should I make a system
install from scratch ?
I have a lot of important C and Fortran programs comiled on that macine
and I would like them to still work with solaris 9.
