Solaris 8 / Disk I/O Error

Hi Managers,

  I've run across one of the oddest problems I've ever seen, and I'm hoping
somebody can help out.
  I've removed all the slices from a disk ( except slice 2 ) and labelled
it. The VTOC looks like this:

* /dev/dsk/c0t8d0s2 partition map
* Flags:
* 1: unmountable
* 10: read-only
*
* Unallocated space:
* First Sector Last
* Sector Count Sector
* 0 2356000 2355999
* 12844912 22523360 35368271
*
* First Sector Last
* Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory
       1 0 00 2356000 10488912 12844911
       2 5 00 0 35368272 35368271

  I cannot access this disk at all. Even the dd tool is unable to read the
disk:

# dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t8d0s2 of=/tmp/c0t8d0s2.dump count=5 bs=1024k
dd: /dev/rdsk/c0t8d0s2: open: I/O error

  If, however I create a slice on slice 0, then the above command will work
fine. The new slice _has_ to be on slice 0, any other slice and the disk
will still be unusable. This is true for all of the disks on the system, not
just the one listed above.

  Am I missing something? I've never had to create a slice to use a disk
before -- at the very least I've been able to use slice 2 to access the
disk. This wouldn't normally be a problem, but I can't initialise the disk
for use with Veritas Volume Manager, since the first step in initialisation
is to remove all the slices, after which the disk is inaccessible.

  Any information would be appreciated.

Regards,
  Ian Roddis
