Solaris 8/Forte C++ 6u2 compiling issues

All,
This is not strictly an admin issue but you guys cover so many environments
somebody may have a clue for me.
I just upgraded my development server from 7 to 8 and Forte C++ from 6u1 to
6u2.
We compile with debug during the testing and then without for production
executables and after the upgrade, for the first time in 8 years of Solaris
development, we couldn't get an executable without debug. Since any new,
inexplicable behavior usually means you need a patch, we applied 111685-09.
After that we started getting errors from the linker:

Linking server_up ---------------------------- 09:07:44
CC -instances=static -s -R -L../../../lib -o ../../../bin/server_up
sv_mgr.o logger.o datetime.o mtx.o mtxlock.o statistics.o stltypes.o
sysconf.o dispmsg.o socket.o socklst.o threadwrap.o upconfig.o upinimgr.o
upisignal.o -lsocket -ldl -lnsl -lgen -lposix4
Undefined first referenced
 symbol in file
long __rwstd::InterlockedDecrement(long*) sv_mgr.o
long __rwstd::InterlockedIncrement(long*) statistics.o
long __rwstd::InterlockedExchange(long*,long) stltypes.o
ld: fatal: Symbol referencing errors. No output written to
../../../bin/server_up
make: *** [server_up] Error 1

A search of the entire internet produced the puzzling information that these
symbols are related to WIN32. A search of the entire machine so far has not
produced the culprit. We have never attempted to port this code to windows
or port any windows code to this machine. I'm turning to you in case any
body recognizes any part of this or might have any clues. Even if I get the
windows thing cleared up, we still can't get good executables without
debugging turned on. Thanks in advance for anything anybody can offer.
