E250 Hot Swap Disks & SCSI Problems?

bumbed out. I've done this several times before & never had a problem.

I swapped some disks around between three E250's. Hot. took two 18's
from E250-a & put them in E250-b (letters just to distinguish systems).
took one 36 from E250-c and put it in the E250-a. careful to pop the
lever, let it spin down, ground myself on the frame, pull the drive, put
it into the other machine, seat it with the lever, wait for it to spin
up. metatool sees them & I set them up. rebuilt E250-a with a fresh
Solaris 8 install.

The problem is with E250-b. that was short of space (it has an array
that is at 100%) & thus all the disk exchanges. It really needs to be
rebuilt, but has to be an upgrade, not a fresh install. I couldn't use
the disk tool from metatool, because of some problems with that system.
so I tried moving the two 18's again from that to recently built E250-d
to get them set up properly & then back to E250-b again. Didn't work
because E250-d had been minimized for security & didn't have the tools I
needed either.

So, bite the bullet & just use standard command line formatting. But, on
the last disk exchange of the two 18's from E250-d back to E250-b, the
system went into a CPU panic when I tried to run metatool. it wouldn't
respond to anything either remotely or at the console. finally, I did a
stop-a and a sync. It took quite a while, and on the reboot had a number
of complaints about drive problems that it claimed to fix, made some
complaints about parity on the SCSI bus, reset the SCSI bus a few times,
and finally came up. It appears to be alright, except the two 18's don't
show up in format, even though their lights are on.

So, the questions are: is what I am doing with drives wrong? what would
you do? how do I troubleshoot and resolve the situtation I'm in now?
that is, how do I activate and format the two 18's so that I can then
set them up in a metadevice and catenate them to the array?

Following are the errors from a tail of /var/adm/messages
