Ultra2 serial port issues

Found ourselves in an interesting catch-22. Just got handed a Ultra2, but
it won't respond to ttya sends. It will respond to send-breaks, but won't
respond to typing. Serial port info is flowing from the Ultra2 to the
serial console, but not from the serial console to the Ultra2.

The catch-22? We send input-device and output-device to ttya. So
keyboard/monitor won't work, and ttya won't send. We know the cable/app
are good, it works with a Sparc20. Move the cable over to the Ultra2, and
we get POST info, and can send-break, but can't type 'boot cdrom'.

Is there a hardware reset to set the nvram back to default? Any idea why
ttya will receive, but not send (on a known-good cable/app)?

Thanks!
