can't run some of the basic unix commands

Dear Guru:

Have anyone seen this before ?
All of sudden, lots of basic commands just can't be run.

root> ps
ps: cannot execute

root>hostname
hostname: cannot execute

root>dmesg
dmesg: cannot execute

root>cat messages.0
cat: cannot read messages.0: No such device or address

Platform: Sun Solaris 5.8 E4500
