/etc/mail/aliases problem?!

Hey everyone:

I'm just plain stumped on this one...., when I try to use any of the mail
binaries on my system, its looking for a alias table with a colon at the
end...

-
gio@netapp:~$ mail gio
/bin/mail: /etc/mail/aliases:: not found
-

I symbolically link aliases: to aliases, and try it now..., and here is what
I get:

-
gio@netapp:~$ mail gio
/etc/mail/aliases:: Postmaster:: command not found
/etc/mail/aliases:: abuse:: command not found
/etc/mail/aliases:: spam:: command not found
etc...etc...etc... and so on...
-

Any ideas on what could be causing that? I've checked the mail binary, and
it looks like such:

-
gio@netapp:~$ ls -l /bin/mail
-r-x--s--x 1 root mail 69 Aug 13 2001 /bin/mail
-

...and my alias table

-
gio@netapp:~$ ls -l /etc/mail/aliases
-rwxrwx--- 1 root mail 18845 Jul 26 13:42 /etc/mail/aliases
-

I've tried taking off the +x bit on the permissions, so it would be perm
660, and it does this:

-
gio@netapp:~$ mail gio
/bin/mail: /etc/mail/aliases:: cannot execute
-

I'm stumped..., any ideas? Thanks for ya time..., gl hf..., and have a
g'day.
