input_userauth_request: missmatch

We've been trying to puzzle out a connection problem between some
windows machines and our Sun server running Solaris 9. The issue we
thought we were troubleshooting was samba printing. However, when we
pulled up secure-crt on one of their machines to connect to the server
and check something there, we were unable to login and I found the
following error in authlog.

Mar 18 12:30:15 servera sshd[29344]: [ID 800047 auth.info]
input_userauth_request: missmatch: (usery,ssh-connection)!=(userx,
ssh-connection)
Mar 18 12:30:15 servera sshd[29344]: [ID 800047 auth.info] Failed
password for NOUSER from 172.30.55.114 port 1035 ssh2

I don't believe I've ever seen this before. Of particular note is the
mispelling of "missmatch", which provides a significant narrowing of the
google search. Nevertheless, I didn't find anything to help in
troubleshooting. I changed the names of the server and the users. userx
was the windows user of that desktop. usery was what we typed into the
login dialog (replacing the preselected userx).

Does anyone have a clue what causes the above error? A google of
"input_userauth_request missmatch" brings up some source code for
openssh, but I'm not sure I want to try figuring it out from that.

TIA
