Xsun and beep

I've got some Solaris (Sparc, Solaris 7, 8, 9) boxen. Problem I've
noticed pretty consistently: while Xsun+CDE is dealing with a beep
event, it doesn't process other events. This is easy to see if you
have a "long" duration beep configured. But I have the problem for
other reasons: I'm using USB audio on a Solaris 9 box, and the USB
driver adds a short delay before it plays the sound. I've got Xsun on
the Solaris 9 box doing -audiobell, so the short delay means that X
freezes for a noticeable fraction of a second every time there is a
beep. Multiple beeps in a row make the system unusable for a short
length of time. The system does not have an onboard speaker, so I
cannot use the console beep device.

Is there a way to work around this problem -- either to reduce the USB
delay (I'm already using USBA10), or get beep implemented some other
way, or get Xsun to behave when a beep occurs? Or should I whine to
Sun? Seems to me like the basic problem is that Xsun's beep behavior
is buggy.
