Link home directory

Hi everyone.

I have searched the archives but can't find anything. Apologies if I have
missed out.

I won't bore you with the reasons ( all to do with business continuity ) but
what I would like to set up is the following:

NIS password map entry for user1 which sets the home directory to be
/home/server1
NIS auto_home map which points /home/user1 to server1:/somepath/user1
Symbolic link on server1 which points /somepath/user1 to
/net/server2/somepath/user1

Unfortunately this does not work. Log in as user1 and I get the message "No
directory".

If I log into server1 and cd to /somepath/user1 I am directed to
/net/server2/somepath/user1, so the link works.

If I created a directory server1:/somepath/user1, in place of the link, then
I can log in fine, with my home directory now on server1, so all the NIS
stuff works (I knew this anyway from all the other accounts which are
working).

It would seem like you can't point the home directory at a link.

Has anyone tried this, did it work (if so can you give me any advice or
detail) or is this not possible (in which case I shall stop wasting my time
and yours).

By the way, the servers are running Sol7 and the clients Sol2.6, but I
shouldn't think it matters what Solaris levels are running.

Many thanks
David Glass
