Thanks for all the responses.

We where able to get this system running by:
Booting from cd
  mounting the desired root disk as /xxx
  deleting the device tree ( /dev and /devices directories along with
the path_to_inst file
  running /usr/sbin/devfsadm -r /xxx -p /xxx/etc/path_to_inst

boot with -ar
