thanks for all the suggestions/questions...

Several folks asked for a sample output. the ftp
sessions were initiated from two different sources,
the first a PC from the dos/cmd window.. the 2nd ftp
session was initiated from an x86 running solaris 10
on it.

one person suggested we truss the ftp session, i had
forgotten to mention that we had tried that and
compared that truss output to a known good ftp session
and could not see any differences that led us down the
garden path...

also, several folks asked if the ftp service was
running, that was the first thing I had checked and
indeed, an svcs | grep ftp says it's online.

several other questions from other folks:

is it using standard ports? yes, ports 20 and 21..

using chroot ?? not sure how this plays into using
ftp, as i've never used this before..

i still haven't solved this..
