forgetful vxvm 5

Hello managers.

I've installed vxvm 5 on a v210 running solaris 9 9/05 that was patched in
June 2007.

Previously the v210 was running vxvm4 under a different hostname and a 3rd
party vendor license.
I've uninstalled vxvm4, renamed the server in the usual files and
installed vxvm 5 with a new license.

vxdctl enable gives the following error:
VxVM vxdctl ERROR V-5-1-307 vxconfigd is not running, cannot enable

Veritas/Symantec's answer so far (I have an open support case with them)
is to do the following:
root@dtireports1:/:# vxdctl stop
vxdctl: Configuration daemon is not accessible
root@dtireports1:/:# vxiod set 10
root@dtireports1:/:# vxconfigd -m disable
root@dtireports1:/:# vxdctl init hostid
root@dtireports1:/:# vxdctl enable

which convinces vxvm that it really should start up on my server.
But on reboot vxvm forgets that it should start up.

Veritas support says my problem stems from the server being renamed.

Anyone have an idea on how to fix this? I've tried reinstalling vxvm5 a
couple of times without any luck. I'll summarize...
