update on e1000g problem -- what determines nic enumeration?

In regards to the problem I posted about earlier, I have learned through
analyzing the output of prtconf -v
that indeed the system recognizes 4 nics -- two onboard and two from my
added Intel Pro adapter (two ports).
The problem seems to be that the "Ethernet Controller" entries enumerate as:
e1000g4
e1000g5
e1000g2
e1000g3

instead of
e1000g0
e1000g1
e1000g2
e1000g3

Q: what determines the numbering of ethernet adapters? How can I change it?
