failure to plumb e1000g0 interface: possible reasons? help requested

When I attempt to initialize the first onboard GigE port on a Solaris
10 x86 machine, I get the following error:

> ifconfig e1000g0 plumb
>>>>> ifconfig: plumb: e1000g0: Invalid argument

I have checked the /etc/path_to_inst file and it has six entries for
e1000g instances, as does the prtconf -v output.
what are some pathways i can use to determine how to solve this problem?
