Recommended patch strategy

Hello Sunmanagers,

I'm new to Solaris System Administration, and am now managing a handful of
Solaris 9 machines. One of the first tasks I want to do is find out which
patches these systems are missing and update the systems if they are missing
any critical patches. I have been researching the issue and find that there
are more than a few ways to deal with the issue. Update Manager, smpatch,
patchadd, Patch Packs, etc... These are production machines that need
maximum uptime so I only want to apply patches that are necessary.

What are your recommendations on updating your production Solaris boxes? (
e.g. Periodically applying a Alert Patch Pack)

I'm interested in installing Update Manager on these boxes but it installs a
newer version of java, which I don't want to intefere with the Oracle
databases and other applications that may be using java on the system. Do
you foresee this causing any problems?

Thank you,
