Query: 3511 Disk Array HW Controller fails to come up after scheduled downtime (ugh?!)

Hi everyone,

I've trawled list archives and google with no joy. I am curious if
anyone has ever seen something similar / has any comments or
suggestions.

I've got a pair of 3511 disk arrays (the first has standard HW Raid
Controller, the second is a JBOD, slaved to the HW Controller in the
first unit) which have been running smoothly for a few years. This
past weekend we had a scheduled downtime (power outage for server
room) so all gear was shutdown cleanly prior to the outage, which
lasted approximately 30 hours.

When trying to power things back up, the 3511 disk array with the HW
raid controller is "not happy". Specifically, no LEDs on the "hw raid
backplane" are lighting up. (LEDs on the second backplane area are
lighting up green, and the 2 PSUs are lit up green; and the HDDs on
the front are all happily lit). Approx 10 seconds after applying
power, it gives me a sad-sounding beep code, approx thus,

8 fast beeps // 1 short beep / 3 fast & 1 long / 1 short

I've tried various "hopeful" attempts at making things better, ie,
step below and then power back on..

-power down the gear and let it rest
-power down the gear, reseat 2 x PSU and 2 x controller - modules at back
-power down gear, leave reseatable things unseated for 20minutes, then reseat

alas there is no change to behaviour. The main controller backplane
remains with no LEDs lit.

>From other units I've got here which are similar, I get the feeling
that at the very least, I should be seeing a "battery LED" indicating
status of the cache battery, and also likely LEDs lit on the 2
fibre-ports which are plugged to hosts. Also in theory should see an
LED on the "raid controller status" led. The fact that all these
things are simply "off" across the board makes me .. a bit worried.

It is just peculiar, that things were all working perfectly, but after
being powered off (approx 30 hours over the weekend) -- that they
would not come back up.

Of course, this gear is no longer under sun contract / maintenance, so
getting replacement parts swapped in (first try the controller module
I assume?) is not trivial, but is of course doable (buy parts from 3rd
party resellers most likely).

If anyone has ever seen anything similar, or has any comments on
"things to try" ... I'm very much appreciative of any help /
suggestions.

Many thanks,

Tim Chipman
