NIS problem with logins

Hello,

I am running NIS on Solaris 8. We are experiencing some problems where
some users cannot login, but other users can log in with no problems.
The users with problems all seem to be users who were newly created over
the past couple of months. Older users do not have problems logging in.
It seems that if the problem user changes their password, they could log
in. There was one user who worked one day, but then did not work the
next day, but did not change their password in between.

I tried to to the user with their password, and truss the output of su.
I compared it to truss output for doing an su to my account when I type
in my correct password, and a bad password. The problem account truss
output is the same as when I type a bad password with my account. I see
the user when I run "ypcat passwd|grep username". I have the same
problem on a server that is bound to the NIS master, and one that is
bound to the NIS slave.

The users are created via our provisioning system, and the same password
is in ldap as in NIS. Applications using ldap work, but logging in with
a NIS account does not. If we did not have a user who worked one day
and not the other, I might suspect the way the account was created, but
having that user invalidates that idea. As far as I know, nothing
changed with the way the accounts are created.

Does anyone have ideas, or other ideas on what I could do to
troubleshoot? I hit a brick wall with snoop an truss.

Thank you.

Nicole
