We're thinking about replacing our DNS servers and consolidating some
disparate DNS systems into one nice big happy DNS family. We are thinking
the SunFire V215 and/or V245 would be a good platform, with its redundant
power supplies and multiple CPU capability.
We haven't had the opportunity to actually experience these systems yet, and
I would like to know how they have fared in actual production settings. I
know very little about SAS, other than what I have read. I am also a little
leery about the 'hot pluggable' capability of these systems.
So how do they do? Are there any better Sun systems to use for our
purposes? 72 GB disks is going to be overkill for what we are needing, but
maybe we can use them for temporary storage of files or something. As I
said before, I am concerned about the 'hot pluggable' drives. Does this
really mean 'hot swappable', as in if a drive fails we can swap out drives
while the system is running, provided we have mirrored or RAIDed the system
drives, or does it mean we have to bring the systems down to single-user,
but don't have to power the systems off before replacing failed drives?
