Does anyone have any thoughts on how to create an m-value for use in
deploying a virtulized environment. As an example, if we have a Sun V440
with 4 CPU's and 12 Gbytes of memory running Solaris 8, how many of those
(assuming 85% utilization) could be migrated to a T2000 running LDoms. I
know that Sun has a formula / sizing tool for figuring that out but it's not
available to the public.
Apparently it works out like this:
V440/4cpu @1.2Ghz/S8 = 35000
T2000/8 Core @1.4Ghz/S10 = 136600
The question is how to derive these numbers so that we can play with
different configuration options.
You could look at those two systems and say
4 * 1.2 = 4.8
8 * 1.4 = 11.2
beyond that you'd need to know the OS version scaling factor.
They might be using MHz rather than GHz so they get numbers in the
thousands...
35000 / 4.8 = 7292
136600 / 11.2 = 12196
12196 / 7292 = 1.67
which looks like they're claiming that Solaris 10 is 1.67 times faster than
Solaris 8.
Any thoughts?
