Turning off tape compression

This seems like it should be dead simple, but I'm stuck.

I have an external SDLT 320 tape drive hooked up to a V240 running
Solaris 8. I'm looking to do software compression as I've been told we
need to start encrypting our backups.

Document I found on Sunsolve says using /dev/rmt/0mbn when the tape is
at BOT (just the beginning?) will disable compression (for that specific
run I'd assume). This didn't work.

I've found references to setting ST_MODE_SEL_COMP in st.conf, but I've
been unable to determine how to use that. There isn't an entry in
st.conf for any SDLT drives. Even if I had one to edit, I don't know
where or what I'd set ST_MODE_SEL_COMP to.

The drive doesn't appear to have any jumpers for this either.

Anyone know? This can't be an uncommon thing to run into.

Thanks,
Chris
