CDE locks up

I've got a strange issue with CDE on a Solaris 8 e250. From the CDE
login screen I tried to select command line login. The screen grayed
out like it was shutting down dtterm and then locked up. I can still do
a Stop+A but I don't want to reset from there if I don't have to. I
telneted into the server and issued an init 6 but the server did not
reboot. I know it looks like the dt services are locked up. How can I
gracefully shut down the server?
