No console when rebooted into single user mode?

Hi Everyone,

I have a pair of SunFire V240 servers which when I reboot them into
single user mode, they seem to lose their consoles. I have two
other machines, also set up by the same company, which do not
exhibit this behavior.

Quick summary is that these two machines when rebooted into single
user mode, come up in single user mode, but appear to stop talking to
the console, as soon as it's time to enter root's password.

Has anyone seen this before? I'm at a loss as to why this might
be. Could console be defined incorrectly? Each of these machines
is connected to a Shark Rack, which is basically a KVM device.
It does full graphical X displays and so forth including the USB
mouse.

Since the initial set up of these machines was contracted out to
a consultant, I can't vouch entirely for how they were set up.

Anyway, if you have any thoughts or ideas/suggestions on where I
might look, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
