bad ELF flags value: [EF_SPARC_32PLUS]

System:
    Sun Sparc 20, model 712 (sun4m)
    Solaris 8, 117350-11

Installed a bunch of patches and the gnome-install package, the main
point being to get support for the latest Adobe Acrobat reader and
"current" versions of Mozilla/Firefox. (Added the DST patches while I
was about it.)

Trying to run a (shared) old version of Mozilla or the newly-installed
(shared) version of acroread, I get

    ld.so.1: <progname>: fatal: <path_to_some.so>:
        bad ELF flags value: [EF_SPARC_32PLUS]

(tho all on one long line).

Google turned up nothing useful. Searching SunSolve turned up three
hits, none of which I was allowed to view, being as I lack a SunSolve
support contract. (Why does Sun show you tantalizing hits for stuff
they won't let you see? Don't they realize that just alienates
customers and potential customers?)

Can anybody tell me what the error in question means and if there's
anything I can do about it? Will I run into this applying the same
patches and installation to a pair of sun4u boxen? (I suspect not.)

Naturally, I will summarize.

Thanks,
Jim
