Veritas, disksuite, SDS, Sun cluster etc

Hello all.

Thanks for all your emails on this subject, but I am still confused about th=
e abilities of Sun Cluster. Yes, it can do fall over and load balancing. How=
ever, can it cluster file systems? For example, can two nodes of a cluster b=
oth NFS export the same filesystem from a SAN disk at the same time, concurr=
ently, with the cluster software handling the disk locking?

Page 41 from the Sun Cluster Concepts Guide suggests it can viz "Coherency p=
rotocols are used to preserve the UNIX file access semantics even if the fil=
e is accessed concurrently from multiple nodes" and "A process can open a fi=
le that is located anywhere in the system". I guess a load balanced NFS conf=
ig would need this functionality?

However, my understanding of the concept may be wrong, and many of you belie=
ve Sun clusters CAN NOT cluster files systems, and when one node files, the=
file system has to be switched to another node using metadisks etc. Has any=
one got a Sun file cluster running?

I realize there may be better OS's to for clustering but unfortunately I am=
stuck with Sun and on a tight budget!

Thanks in advance for any comments.

David

You've got to understand that when it comes to real clustering SUN have esse=
ntially zero experience. The two serious players in the market historically=
 were IBM and DEC.

The best unix clustering is/was Tru64 because they leveraged the VMS technol=
ogies. In case you didn't know all the flash Oracle RAC/10g was essentially=
based on Trucluster. Nothing new under the sun eh?

As I see it there are two ways to approach your solution. Run some replicate=
d SAN storage shared out across and NFS cluster or use Veritas cluster file=
 system.

AFAIK SUN don't do their own cluster file system. Don't know if zfs qualifie=
s.

Veritas pretty much have the market to themselves.
