Suggestions for disk layout

I have a Sun V490 that has two internal 146GB disks, no additional
external storage available.

I need to install Solaris 10 on the box and am trying to determine the
optimal file system arrangement. In addition to space for the OS (root,
swap, var) I'll need to allocate space for third-party software, oracle
and areas for software builds/compiles.

Does Solaris Volume Manager make sense in this instance and if so, what
rules-of-thumb are suggested for a 2-disk system?

Or, should I just use UFS partitions on the 2 disks balancing
anticipated I/O needs?
