File descriptors on Solaris.

Hi,
I'm trying to understand what the difference is between the
"rlim" for the maximum file descriptors in /etc/system file. And a limit
which is applicable to the shell or application. For example with
weblogic, BEA recommend that the /etc/system rlim is set to 8192. Yet in
one of their start up scripts commEnv.sh they set the limit to 1024.

So when you do a "ulimit -a" it comes out at 8192.

When you do a "plimit <pid>" on the java process it comes out at 1024.

So whats the difference? And what does hard and soft limits mean as
well?

Any help appreciated.

Alistair.
