ZFS and Zone questions for migration

Hi Sunmanagers

Firstable all "a happy new year" :-)

Now I'm planning to migrate all my servers running on Solaris 8 to two E450
Enterprise servers using Solaris 10 with zones and zfs. It means goal would
be to splitt all the Solaris 8 servers to the 2 E450 Enterprise servers
using zone and zfs configurations. For that I read a lot depending zone and
zfs configuration but at the moment some details are not clear and to really
plan a smoth configuration I have some questions:

- I would use Solaris 10 11/06 but if I'm correct even this is the newest
release zfs is not yet supported to mirror root filesystem on which the
global zone would configured. I do not have a hardware solution to mirror
the root filesystem. Now what would be the solution....? In the past I used
disksuite. Is disksuite still available for Solaris 10 11/06 and recommended
to use it for mirroring the root filesystem and addtional using zfs for
other mountpoints?

- On each machine I would create about 8 zones. The different zones would be
for different services like dns, webservers etc. Even there are different
services I would like to use one zfs mountpoint. If I understood it correct
it must be created in the global zone one mountpoint for zfs. Each zone
would be created under this mountpoint it means:

In the global zone create /zones as a zfs mountpoint
Each zone would be created under the zfs mountpoint /zones it means
/zones/zone-1, /zones/zone-2 etc.

There is no need that each zones manages there one zfs mountpoints under the
global zone it means "zfs childrens" within the zones. How to prevent that
only zfs can be managed from global zone? What has to be careful within this
constellation it means some documents pointing to that first zfs has to be
created and afterwards the zones because the otherway around it more
complecate?

- I would like to have really independend zones it means if one zone needs a
addtional Solaris or Sunfreeware Package I would like that this is really
installed only in this zone which it is needed and not in the global zone or
in the other zones etc. I did not understand out of the documentation how I
can do this! There was also some comments depending Sunfreeware packages it
means to create within each zone a link from /usr/local to the /opt
dirctory. Is this recommended? Do you have some experience or suggestions?

It is for me very important to carefully plan the stuff that I would be
really flexible in the future etc. Any comments suggestions would be really
wellcome. If there is more info needed no problem give me a hint what is
missing etc.

Again all a happy new year and in advanced many thanks.

Andrea
